“I can never get my hair to look like this at home!” is probably the most popular quote from clients at the end of their appointments!.... Keep reading!

Trust me, getting those beach waves and soft curls aren’t for the weak. It takes a lot of practice and a good amount of times of getting those poodle-style curls (yikes) but I’ve come up with a list of tricks you can use to get the perfect beach wave!
1. Your first step should always be to divide your hair into sections! If you want more of a curly look (usually for short-medium length hair), you would use smaller and more sections. For less of a curly look and larger waves (usually on long hair), you would use bigger and a less amount of sections. This also helps the curls last longer!
2. Hold your tool vertical! Most of the time people think to roll the hair horizontally or hold the wand/straightener sideways and all over the place. Keeping your tool straight up and down will cause the curl to “fall” more instead of wanting to pop up and give you 80’s hair.
3. Alternate the way your curl is forming every section! Roll one curl towards your face and roll the next one away from your face. Do this all the way around the head! This helps your curls have more of a textured look and more of that “natural” curl pattern. Curling all of the hair the same direction will form a large wave (which is also nice but not how you get this particular look).
4. Leave about 1/2-3/4 of an inch of the very ends out of the tool! This helps keep it soft and airy at the ends instead of spiraled and too crinkled. Your ends are the thinnest part of the strand so it will pick up the curl easier than the rest.
5. Only leave the tool on the hair for seconds! Yes, we want the curl to stay and last but focusing too much heat on the area will secure the curl in too tight so the “soft wave” look won’t be achievable.
6. Allow the curls to cool before brushing it out! When the hair is still hot, the shape can be changed and the curls will fall too much. Now keep in mind, if you accidentally get a piece too curly then you would want to brush it out right after removing it from the heat. After all the hair is cooled and in the right amount of curl, use your fingers to comb all the curls out.
There is so much more that goes into the perfect “beached look”, but these few key tricks of mine should be enough to help you step up your curl game, girl!
